Artist Statement:
I enjoy the versatility of working in both pastel and oil – each allows me to express myself in singular ways, enriching my painting, and adding to my growth as an artist.
Most of my pastels begin with a transparent water-media under-painting, in a complementary color that sparkles through and contrasts with the opacity of the pastel strokes, adding unity to the work. Although pastels’ pure pigments are in a stick form, I break them and apply them with broad strokes as if I were using a brush. Pastel’s pure colors and refractive qualities shimmer on the surface of the sanded paper I use. I layer, blend, or place colors side by side to create iridescent luminous effects. Just looking at the pastels in their trays, reminds me of the thrill of opening a box of 64 crayons as a child and breathing in the wonderful scent of “art”.
My objective is to tell a story, and capture a mood or a moment in time. I strive to describe only the essence of a scene leaving out unnecessary details, inviting the viewer to interpret the art through their own experience. I wish to create an emotional connection through the subject matter that resonates, and when that happens, it’s magic!
