Artist Statement:
"I paint the transient light and color that captivate me, and hope the moment portrayed touches the heart of the viewer."
As did Degas and Cassatt, I enjoy working in pastels and in oil to capture scenes that inspire me.
I worked almost exclusively in pastels until recently, when I ventured back into oil painting, my media of choice in art school. Iíve discovered that working in both media enriches my painting and adds to my growth as an artist.
Most of my pastels begin with toning the paper with watermedia to create an underpainting that sparkles through the pastel strokes adding unity to the finished painting. The immediacy of working in pastel is a joy. The pure colors and refractive quality of pastels shimmering on the surface of the sanded paper I use, always enthralls me through each stage of the painting. I am constantly amazed and fascinated by the way one can layer, blend, mix, or place colors side by side to create iridescent luminous effects. Just looking at the pastels in their trays, reminds me of the thrill of opening that first box of 64 crayons as a child and breathing in the wonderful scent of ěartî.
My oil painting is done mostly plein air and the fluidity of the media allows me to capture the fleeting light of the moment outdoors. I enjoy the totally different experience of mixing color on the palette and the ease of covering large areas quickly. The control of creating each texture and color of the oil paint is exciting, and I especially enjoy the unexpected effects that can be achieved with a palette knife.
In all my work I strive to capture the essence of the subject, tell a story, and express a mood, a feeling, or capture a moment in time. I wish to convey an emotional connection with the subject matter that resonates with the viewer; and when that happens, itís magic!
